Question: I just bought a pre existing home that needs work. I need to buy some power tools and I see my local tool store carries Delta tools. Are Delta tools any good or should I look elsewhere?

Answer: I've owned and currently own several Delta tools and I can tell you that they are quality tools. I've had my Delta bench grinder and drill press for nearly 10 years and they just keep on running! Although a lot of hardware stores like Lowe's and Home Depot will carry Delta tools, I suggest you buy them online. I often save twenty bucks or more by buying my tools online and in many cases, I can get free shipping! Most orders will arrive in under a week.

Also, Delta tools carry a good warranty, probably one of the best in the industry. You'll find many Contractors and shops using Delta tools due to their durability and their ability to stand up to long hours of use. Not a whole lot of inexpensive tools can say that. My Delta drill press and Delta grinder get used nearly every day and I know when I flip that switch, they're going to come on and work the way they're suppose to.

What do the torque setting on a drill mean?

We get this question quite a bit. Most people are confused about the torque feature on most electric and cordless drills. In a nutshell, these torque setting represent varying degrees of power. Think of them as a power setting for your drill. The higher the number, the more power.

Well, it sounds like all you need to do is just set the drill to the highest power setting and forget about it, doesn't it? Nothing could be further from the truth. There's a reason they put those torque setting on a drill! It's not some useless feature on your power tools!

For one thing, when you set the torque setting to a lower setting, it will stop or make that "clickity, clickity, clickity" sound. This means you've reached the maximum torque for that setting. This comes in useful for preventing over stripping of a screw or over-tightening a nut on a bolt.

If you are using the drill to drive deck screws into a deck, then you would probably need the highest setting. You can also use the lower setting to drive screws flush with the surface of the wood. Once you find the perfect setting so that the drill stops when the head is flush with the wood surface, your job will become faster and faster!

So now that you know what the torque settings on a drill mean, go out and experiment with it. You'll find you'll become more accurate and your jobs look more professional!

Chuck Asks - I've been looking into buying combo power tool sets to use in my construction business. I'm in the process of remodeling my home and need a circular saw, a cordless drill and a reciprocating saw. I saw the Milwaukee V28 set and it looks like just what I need. Are Milwaukee tools good? If not, what are the best cordless power tools on the market today and where can I get the best deals on tools? Thanks!

Answer: Hey Chuck, thanks for stopping by. Thanks for the question and it's a good one! Seriously though, Milwaukee makes some great cordless power tools. Having said that, so does Dewalt, Porter Cable, Bosch, Delta and many other companies. The power tools that I tend to stay away from are those that are so cheap you wonder what's wrong with them! Most of these will have been made in China, so it always pays to look at the label and see where it was made and what kind of warranty it has. Some of the big box stores have their own brands and China is where they get them.

Don't get me wrong, there's always a time and place for cheap Chinese power tools, but not if you plan on using them a great deal. I'll go to Harbor Freight and buy their Chinese tools if I only plan on using them every so often. If I plan on using a tool nearly every day, I buy the best I can. Experience over 30 years has proven to me that I won't be sorry with buying quality power tools!

Question: My Husband has nearly every kind of tool you could think of. Can you give me some gift ideas for a man who has everything? He has several types of big saws, and all the little power tools-drills, dremel tools, power sanders and the like. He is good at woodworking, but I don't think he has many woodworking type tools. I would like to get him something that he will use not something that will just sit on the shop shelf and collect dust.

Answer: You're in luck. Whether it's Fathers Day or not, I recently wrote an article about some unique but very useful tools that would make the perfect gift for Fathers Day. Not only that, these tools would make great gifts for any guy who loves using power tools.

If those don't catch your eye, then try getting him a gift card to someplace like Rocklers or Woodcraft. These are stores that sell tools and hardware. This way, he can pick out his own tools. In fact, I tell my family and friends that if they really want to get me something I love, get me gift cards from those two places.

I'm tired of good intentioned friends and family members who keep getting me cheap, useless tools for gifts. A lot of people see those infomercials on the newest contraption to hit the market and if it's $19.99 or less, someone will usually give it to me for a gift.

The only exception that I can think of right now is the Rockwell SoniCrafter. That was an infomercial product that turned out to be very useful around my shop. But then of course, it was quite a bit more than $19.99!

Answer: Normally you have several options when it comes to buying replacement batteries for power tools. For others, not so much. You're tied to the manufacturers replacement battery for your power tool.

For example, there are some pretty good Chinese knockoffs of Dewalt and Makita cordless power tool batteries. No if you use them and something goes wrong, most of the time these manufacturers will not honor the warranty. You must be using the companies replacement battery or the original battery that came with the power tool. But if your cordless tool is not under any warranty and you want to buy a cheaper replacement battery for your cordless too, then feelf ree to go ahead and give it a try. You may find that these cheaper batteries are just as good as the big name companies batteries!

This helps indicate the line of cut thus enhancing the precision of this compound saw. The Makita operates on a powerful 15 amp direct drive motor. No more bogging your saw down on those big cuts! Dual steel rails with linear ball bearing support provides stability for you along with ensuring greater accuracy in your work. This translates into no more sloppy angled cuts that don't align! If you're tired of fighting your saw instead of enjoying your work, see what a quality saw can do for your projects.

Want more features? The compound miter saw has 9 positive stops at 15, 22.5, 31.6, 45 degrees left or right and at 0 degrees for shifting among the common cutting angles in a jiffy. For finer bevel cuts this Makita miter saw features positive bevel stops at 33.9 degree and 45 degree left and right. A user need not assume the common angles to stop for bevel cut; the saw does that by itself. This tool can work under pressure and still successfully maintain its constant speed with the incorporated electronic speed control. For additional convenience there is a built-in wrench in its single aluminum case. Makita LS1214FL's versatility can be judged by long slide track, wide pivot angle, large turn base, and adjustable pivot fence that can handle almost all type of material and application. Baseboard trim, crown molding or any project that includes complicated angles, you can now do them all and have them fit perfectly with the Makita LS1214FL.

Miter Saws: How To Choose The Right One For You

The Miter Saw is a really useful tool in many workshops. They can make the miter cuts as their name implies, and bevel cuts, compound cuts, and crosscuts as well. If you have a lot of cutting to do, the speed at which they make these cuts is a godsend. If you are looking into getting one for yourself, here is how to choose a Miter Saw that is right for your jobs.

First and foremost, you need to figure out which types of cuts you will be making. If you are satisfied with simply cutting straight down in plain miter or crosscuts, then you will be happy with a simple, lightweight Miter Saw.

You'll also need to look at how much you'll be using your Miter saw. If you only need it for one small weekend job, then renting one or buying a used miter saw may be the answer rather than buying a new one. This is also true if you'll only use it a few times per year.

If you want bevel or compound cuts, however, you will want to get the more advanced Compound Miter Saws. These tilt the blade in a way that makes these cuts possible. If you want the blade to tilt in either direction (so you won't have to turn the material your cutting so often), then a Dual-Lever model will be right for you.

Next, think about how large the materials you are cutting will be. While a ten-inch model works for most people, you may want a twelve-inch blade if you plan to be cutting larger materials. You may even want a smaller blade size than ten inches, if you prefer to have precise cutting on smaller pieces. Keep in mind that the larger sizes generally cost significantly more.

Finally, you should consider if you would rather have a corded or cordless model. Plug-in saws are generally going to run forever, of course, but they lack the convenience of being able to easily carry your saw around without worrying about plugs. If you plan to be working on a site or a project for a long period at one time, even the models with larger batteries might run out. You could consider buying extra batteries or foregoing the cordless models altogether if you don't want to bother worrying about a battery.

Those are the basic considerations to think about when choosing a Miter Saw. Of course, there are all sorts of features and bells-and-whistles that some Miter Saws might have as well. For instance, some Compound Saws come with a sliding head that makes it much easier to cut through wide materials. You'll also want to make sure the guides and indexes on you saw are easy to read during operation.

If you plan to be switching out blades very often, some models have systems that make taking out and installing blades pretty easy. An electric brake will ensure that the blade stops just after you release the trigger, which makes cutting a bit more safe. Finally, some come with dust ports that allow you to collect the sawdust as you cut.

These are some things to consider when you are wondering how to choose a Miter Saw. If you think about what you need before you buy, you will less likely be unhappy with your purchase.

View larger.Kreg Joinery: No Glue or Complicated Math RequiredThe Kreg Jig Jr. takes advantage of a technique called Kreg Joinery. Unlike other techniques, Kreg Joinery requires no glue, no complicated math, and no small army of clamps to make wood joints that will last. With Kreg Joinery, you can finish projects in hours instead of days. You won't spend any time clamping, waiting for glue to dry, or wading through complicated math. It essentially involves drilling a hole at an angle into one workpiece, and connecting it to another workpiece with a self-tapping screw.Amazingly Strong with Half the EffortUnlike mortise and tenons, dowels, and biscuits, the self-tapping screws inside of every Kreg Joint hold the stock together without glue. You don't have to worry about precisely lining up dowel holes, or spending hours cutting a perfect mortise and tenon--you simply drill the holes, drive the screws, and move on to the next project. And because what you see is what you get with Kreg Joinery, you won't spend all your time calculating stock-overlaps and dry-fitting individual workpieces. All you need is simple math to get fast and accurate results.Kreg Jig Jr: The Perfect Home-Repair ToolThe Kreg Jig Jr. is an amazing repair jig with a compact design that lets you work where you need to most. Thanks to its Clamp Pad Adapter, the Jr. can be secured to the workpiece with any standard bar clamp or c-clamp. In addition, the adapter allows the jig to be attached directly to any Kreg Face Clamp (sold separately) for faster and more repeatable pocket-holes.From thin drawer boxes and craft projects to stout 2x4's, this jig can handle them all. Independent Easy-Press positioning sliders feature nine separate depth settings, allowing you to easily join materials from 1/2-inch to 1-1/2-inches thick in 1/8-inch increments. And to set the jig properly, you simply depress the button on the side of the jig and move the sliders so your material thickness is aligned with the arrow on the jig body. It couldn't be any easier. The Kreg Jig Jr. includes a compact, durable plastic carrying case that will ensure that you always have the tool, drill bit, and screws on hand to complete your next project. As a bonus, the case features a molded depth collar gauge for a handy reference. In addition to the Kreg Jig Jr. (model R3), Kreg offers DIYers and anyone new to Kreg joinery the Kreg Jig (model K4). For serious wood workers, Kreg offers the Kreg Jig Master System (model K3MS), the ultimate kit for Kreg Joinery. The Kreg DifferenceWhile each Kreg Jig has its own features designed to meet the particular needs of its users, all Kreg Jigs share a design and high-quality construction which add up to the "Kreg Difference."Kit includes everything you need to get started. Each Kreg Jig features hardened steel drill guides that carry a 100-percent lifetime guarantee. The body of each Kreg Jig is made from a heavy-duty glass-reinforced nylon that offers the resiliency and flexibility you need without sacrificing strength and durability. To create a cleaner pocket-hole and a more finished appearance, all Kreg Jigs shroud the bit and support the workpiece through 100-percent of the drill-stroke. The end result is minimal bit deflection, reduced tear-out, and a clean, pluggable Pocket-Hole fit for finished work.Every Kreg Jig also features an optimized 15 degree drilling angle designed to increase driving efficiency and minimize the overall size of the Pocket-Hole.
Woodworkers trust Popular Mechanics to give them the information they need—and the Workshop series, written by respected DIY author Rick Peters, has proven invaluable. Each title covers a single tool in depth, with photos and exploded views, instructions, charts, and sidebars. This new entry covers the popular miter saw—a relatively new piece of equipment that has become a must-have on every job site and woodworking shop. That’s no surprise: it covers a wide variety of tasks with great precision. Peters helps woodworkers identify which saws and accessories best fit their needs; teaches basic and advanced techniques; and shows how to make jigs and fixtures that expand the tool’s capabilities. Attractive projects include a simple desk frame, beveled tray, and end table.

In these days of extreme weather and blackouts in the news, more and more people are buying backup generators. Needless to say, there's been an influxe of cheap generators that have hit the market. 3000 and 4000 watt generators that use to cost a thousand bucks or more can now be found for less than $500. Some way cheaper than that. But are cheap generators worth the price or should you save more money and get a name brand power generator?

There's one side of the fence that says generators are generators so you might as well buy the cheapest you can get. After all, why should you spend a thousand bucks to get a 4000 watt generator when you can get one for $300?

Some of the people who say this are just naive and do not understand why some things are priced more than others. I mean, isn't a Ford Escort just as good as a Cadillac? They both have 4 wheels, an egine and a tranny...right? So why pay more for a Cadillac?

Others are just cheap and look for the lowest price no matter what.

Cheap Generators have their place, but is it at your home?

There are many reason some generators are cheap while others may cost as much as 5 times the price. Now I'm usually the one that will spend the extra money and get a reliable product. I hate wasting money on anything. I'm a frugal person if there was ever one. But I also realize that there is a reason why some products are cheaper than others.

For one, some of the cheap generators come from foreign countries such as China where the quality control may not be as strict as it could be. It's no secret that China and some other countries do not use the best materials and use cheap labor. Also, many of these Companies that produce products are subsidized by the Government, so actually making a profit isn't high on the list as it is in Countries that don't subsidize their companies.

When Is A Cheap Generator A Good Deal?

Now I understand that some people live on a budget. I'm one also. But I will say there are times when a cheap generator may be perfect for some households. For example, if you plan on keeping a generator in the Garage for emergencies like a Hurricane or other natural disaster, then a cheap generator may be a perfect option for you.

Or maybe you just want one to take along on those rare family camping trips to the lake. In that case, a cheap generator may also fit the bill. You can get small generators that will run a lot of small appliances for around $200 to $300.

Some of these will also be large enough to run small power tools on remote worksites or at the family cabin.

Basically, if you plan to use a cheap generator only occassionally, then it may be a good deal for you.

When Isn't A Cheap Generator A Good Deal?

I myself would never depend on a cheap generator to supply power for my family in case of a natural disaster. During Hurricane Ike, our home was without power for nearly two weeks in 90 degree + temps. I was so thankful that I had bought a Honda generator big enough to run the necessary appliances just for a scenario like this.

Also, after about 4 days, people started showing up from out of state with cheap chinese generators. Generators that once were selling for $300 and $400 were all of a sudden fetching $1500 or more. Needless to say, people were willing to pay a lot of money for cheap generators. In fact, many could have gotten small diesel generators or top of the line Honda generators before the storm for the same price they paid for the cheap ones!

Also, whenever you families safety will be at risk, your money is better spent on a better quality generator like a Honda or comparable generator.

If you plan on using your generator on a routine basis, then you may want to go for a reliable model rather than the cheapest generator you can find. Especially if your income depends on it. Few things are worse than having a generator crap out on you in the middle of a job.

One more reason a cheap generator may cost you more money on down the line.

So if you think you can afford cheap generators, make sure you sit down and think long and hard before running out and finding the cheapest generator you can find. Make sure it fits your needs and that you won't be at risk should it fail you. Otherwise, if cheap is what you want, I say go for it!
