Miter Saws: How To Choose The Right One For You

The Miter Saw is a really useful tool in many workshops. They can make the miter cuts as their name implies, and bevel cuts, compound cuts, and crosscuts as well. If you have a lot of cutting to do, the speed at which they make these cuts is a godsend. If you are looking into getting one for yourself, here is how to choose a Miter Saw that is right for your jobs.

First and foremost, you need to figure out which types of cuts you will be making. If you are satisfied with simply cutting straight down in plain miter or crosscuts, then you will be happy with a simple, lightweight Miter Saw.

You'll also need to look at how much you'll be using your Miter saw. If you only need it for one small weekend job, then renting one or buying a used miter saw may be the answer rather than buying a new one. This is also true if you'll only use it a few times per year.

If you want bevel or compound cuts, however, you will want to get the more advanced Compound Miter Saws. These tilt the blade in a way that makes these cuts possible. If you want the blade to tilt in either direction (so you won't have to turn the material your cutting so often), then a Dual-Lever model will be right for you.

Next, think about how large the materials you are cutting will be. While a ten-inch model works for most people, you may want a twelve-inch blade if you plan to be cutting larger materials. You may even want a smaller blade size than ten inches, if you prefer to have precise cutting on smaller pieces. Keep in mind that the larger sizes generally cost significantly more.

Finally, you should consider if you would rather have a corded or cordless model. Plug-in saws are generally going to run forever, of course, but they lack the convenience of being able to easily carry your saw around without worrying about plugs. If you plan to be working on a site or a project for a long period at one time, even the models with larger batteries might run out. You could consider buying extra batteries or foregoing the cordless models altogether if you don't want to bother worrying about a battery.

Those are the basic considerations to think about when choosing a Miter Saw. Of course, there are all sorts of features and bells-and-whistles that some Miter Saws might have as well. For instance, some Compound Saws come with a sliding head that makes it much easier to cut through wide materials. You'll also want to make sure the guides and indexes on you saw are easy to read during operation.

If you plan to be switching out blades very often, some models have systems that make taking out and installing blades pretty easy. An electric brake will ensure that the blade stops just after you release the trigger, which makes cutting a bit more safe. Finally, some come with dust ports that allow you to collect the sawdust as you cut.

These are some things to consider when you are wondering how to choose a Miter Saw. If you think about what you need before you buy, you will less likely be unhappy with your purchase.

Question: I have just bought a 24 volt cordless drill for 83 usd and it seems to work great.

But I'd like to know why a drill with the same features in another brands like Milwaukee or Dewalt are far more expensive.

Answer: Chinese power tools are okay for most homeowners. They aren't for the heavy users like Construction professionals. Chinese power tools are more geared toward the occasional use by homeowners.

It's been my experience buying cheap Chinese power tools from places such as Harbor Freight that these tools are not durable for heavy or extended uses.

It's said that Chinese power tools use less quality materials than the big name brand tools like Bosch, Dewalt or Milwaukee.

I have several of these tools. Most are specialty tools that I only use every once in a while and couldn't see spending the big bucks on name brand power tools.

If you plan on using these tools on an everyday basis, it will pay to buy the better made and higher quality name brand power tools designed and manufactured to be used everyday.

Question: I think personally the DEWALT, are the only company owned by an American and the quality is second to none but I want to hear all views Milwaukee has really been bought out by TTI that have rigid and Ryobi and has moved operations overseas in Asia. Oh, and just a word of advice, when considered a guarantee of long life as the craftsman or rigid, it means the course of life of the gear, which on avg is a term of 2 years

Answer: Well, I like Dewalt prodcuts also. But are they the best? Not in my opinion. I use power tools day in, day out and if it's a power tool that I'll be using on a regular basis, then I'll pay my money for a Makita or Bosh. They just plain last longer.

On the other hand, if it's a tool I use every once in a while, I'll go with a Dewalt or some other name brand.
